Post-midterms, Pre-finals...

In the afterglow – or aftermath, depending on how you look at it--of a weekend of fun with Halloween and Homecoming, campus is once again buzzing with the news of the election. Election Day was a perfect mix of sunshine and excitement as students meandered campus in their respective party’s paraphernalia.

There were people on every street corner holding ‘Obama’ or ‘McCain’ signs, receiving honks of approval and disapproval from the busy University Avenue traffic.

It was my second time voting but first time in a Presidential Election. I love politics so it was such an exciting day to be able to voice my opinion and encourage others to do the same. My friends (who differ in their beliefs) and I watched the election results all night and celebrated the states that had won our respective colors.

I can’t even wrap my mind around how much this election means to our country and the world. Either way, it was going to be one for the books. It was so cool to be able to say that I contributed to something so large. When Obama was announced the president-elect, there were groups of students who cruised through campus, shouting in celebration. I however, didn’t participate, as I was more interested in the speeches and watching the rest of the results come in.

November 4th seemed so far away, for so long – for the last year! It’s hard to believe that all the attack ads and nasty comments are finally over. It seemed like it wasn’t going to end. Along with that comes post-midterm, pre-final assignment time. I finished all my midterm exams and papers the week before Halloween/Homecoming and had a bit of a lull in assignments. Now, its crunch time with only about a month of school left. Better get back to it…

  • Class & major: senior; broadcast journalism and magazine writing
  • Hometown: Buffalo, MN
  • Favorite Book: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstien
  • When I have free time, I: workout, hang with friends, jam to my iPod, take pictures and explore the city
  • My favorite CLA class so far: CSCL 1501W: Reading History. It was challenging but wasn't the date/event memorization look at history.
  • When you come to Minnesota you've gotta try: the State Fair (cheese curds!), walk the Stone Arch Bridge, the Minneapolis music/art scene, and snowboarding.
  • If I hadn't come to the U of M, I never would have: fallen in love with the atmosphere here: the people, the nearby city, the athletics, the facilities, and the entertainment--all of which are one of a kind.
