Sarah's Blog

It is official: I'm going to graduate.

What a delightful day I had a month ago when I met with my honor's advisor and was told, "Yes, Sarah, you are correct, at the end of this semester you will have earned your degree and will be prepared for graduation."

After years filled with lots of studying, learning, rehearsing and laughing, I was ecstatic to hear these words. I spent the next hour running around campus telling everyone I know-friends, mentors, teachers, anyone who would listen- that "Guess what, I'm going to graduate!"

However, none of my celebrating was actually justified until I finished the logistical process of meeting with my departmental advisor (my advisor within my major) and was officially cleared for graduation. Having met with her yesterday, I am ready for my second (and more official) round of announcements to the world, "Get ready, because I'm graduating."

But wait...

Similar to what I experienced on the brink of graduating from high school, I was faced with a moment of realization: What's next? What do I have planned in the future? And like the high school version of myself, I remembered: Oh yeah, even MORE school.

Since I want to be a dentist, it looks like I'll be sticking around a college campus for at least the next four years. However, unlike the high school version of myself, I have already made the U of M campus my home and I am confident this is where I want to stay. So, if I'm lucky (aka, if I get admitted to the U of M Dental School), I'll get to spend another wonderful 4 years on the U of M campus and someday get to announce, "Guess what, I'm graduating...yet again"

  • Class & major: senior; dance, pre-dentistry
  • Hometown: Anoka, Minnesota
  • When you come to the U of M, you gotta try: to see a student performance. Go to the Whole and listen to a band, wander through an art exhibit, venture to the West Bank for a concert. You ought to see the professional quality and skill of U of M students.
  • Favorite campus hangout: Coffman Memorial Union beause it's a convenient place to meet up with people, eat cheap food, shop for essentials, go to the bank, and study.
  • My advice for a good first semester: Don't cram too much in. I found college much more difficult than high school ans wasn't realistic with the amount I could take on and still be successful. Work with an advisor to plan a realistic work load and don't commit ourself to too many work hours.
