Summertime and the livin' is easy

“Summertime and the livin' is easy.

These lyrics from the musical Porgy and Bess seem surprisingly fitting with how my summer is going so far. While I still have not managed to get any sign of a tan, I have enjoyed playing Frisbee outside almost daily. In the fall I might even tryout my skills and join one of the many pickup games of Ultimate Frisbee that happen so frequently in the Mall Area between Northrop Auditorium and Coffman Union.

On days when the sun is too hot to toss a Frisbee around, I find myself inclined to curl up and read. I’ve been rereading old favorites and discovering new ones. I have also been getting a head start on reading the novels required for the Women’s Contemporary Fiction course I’ll be taking in July. I am really looking forward to this course and to discussing the contents of the novels with the other 22 people in the class. Plus the class meets at a time that works perfectly with my job so I can still earn money to pay rent on my new apartment! Ahhh, life is good.

  • When you come to the U of M, you gotta try: to see a student performance. Go to the Whole and listen to a band, wander through an art exhibit, venture to the West Bank for a concert. You ought to see the professional quality and skill of U of M students.
  • Favorite campus hangout: Coffman Memorial Union beause it's a convenient place to meet up with people, eat cheap food, shop for essentials, go to the bank, and study.
  • My advice for a good first semester: Don't cram too much in. I found college much more difficult than high school ans wasn't realistic with the amount I could take on and still be successful. Work with an advisor to plan a realistic work load and don't commit ourself to too many work hours.
